I've been wanting to do an article about you and your pool for the BBC. Just who are The Moseley Shoals? Who am I? Who are the Shoals? Well, our pool is in need of a lot of repairs and under threat of closure. Moseley Road Swimming Pool is where our group started, back in April A friend of Mark Hillier and myself, who organizes the Gay Outdoors Club West Midlands, asked if we would be swimming in starting a gay swim group for Birmingham and the Midlands area.
Gay alternative to the 'scene'. So, we did! Mark and I both work with Switchboard Birmingham and understand that there is more to gay life and identity than the 'scene'. Starting in a public session, word of mouth and a few regular adverts in the 'Zone' and free magazines, soon grew this group to a regular crowd of about 15 on Mondays.
The Midland's largest social gay group. We were surprised and delighted when the pool staff approached us with the offer of a private session that had become available. From these beginnings the group has swollen to a regular Monday crowd of about 30 people, with an overall membership of about 80, making us, as far as we know, the Midland's largest social gay group.
Such was our popularity at the pool, that soon after we were offered our Sunday lunchtime session as well.
